Psychological Disabilities in the Workplace: Understanding Them and Accommodating Them

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Program Description

During the last few years, employers have seen an increase in requests for leaves and accommodations due to psychological disabilities.  These disabilities are not readily observable in most cases, and employees often keep them “hidden” until a leave or other accommodation is needed.  They pose a particular challenge to employers, who often have limited knowledge about the nature of the psychological disorder in question and how to best address and accommodate it.  This seminar will address the most common psychological disabilities that affect the workplace, the terminology and symptoms associated with them, helpful reference materials (such as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM-5), the effect that common medications used to treat such disorders can have on an employee, and guidance on effectively accommodating psychological disabilities.
